The Garden Island of Kauai is 70 miles to the north west of Oahu or a 40 minute flight from Honolulu Airport. Kauai is the oldest of the Hawaiian Islands and is renowned for its dramatic scenery, excellent hiking, sea and river kayaking and has the most picturesque beach locations in the State. Kauai is the place to go for sightseeing with helicopter tours and sea charters on everyone's itinerary. Kauai has its own stretch of commercial beach resorts at Poipu on the sunny south coast and between Lihue and Kapaa on the east coast. Discerning travellers are drawn to the compelling north coast with the famous Na Pali coastal hike and its secluded beaches and sea kayaking.

The main concentration of upmarket resorts, condominiums and vacation rentals is at Poipu, along the sunny South Coast, but accommodation here is generally at a premium. More affordable accommodation can be found along the East Coast between the towns of Lihue Wailua and Kapa'a where there are a dozen or more large resorts and lots of other affordable accommodation. This area around Kapa'a and Wailua is referred to as the Royal Coconut Coast for it was the main residence of the ancient Hawaiians and has lots of archaeological sites. The charming town of Hanalei along the rainforested North Coast with its adjacent purpose built resort village of Princeville back into some of the islands most breathtaking wilderness and have lovely remote beaches. The West Coast is rugged and wild - ideal for reflection but the wind-swept beaches are not safe for swimming and accommodation is thus limited.
